
Warm weather continued in November thanks to a very warm last week of the month. Temperatures around the twelve-state region averaged 0.6 degrees warmer than normal. Departures for individual states ranged between 0.9 degrees cooler than normal in Delaware to 1.4 degrees above the long-term mean in Vermont. This November was warmer than the last three Novembers and was 3.5 degrees warmer than November 1997.
Preliminary figures indicate that this January through November was 2.8 degrees warmer than normal and the warmest such period in 104 years of record. It was the warmest first eleven months of the year for the states of Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. It was the second warmest for Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. Delaware and West Virginia recorded their third warmest such period, while it ranked sixth in Maine.
Precipitation was well below normal this month, with every state reporting at least a one inch monthly deficit. The region averaged just 47% of the normal November total, making it the region's 9th driest November on record and the driest since 1976. Maryland reported only 35% of their monthly normal, while New Hampshire was closest to normal with 73%.
