Temperatures were near normal throughout the Northeast during November 2000, with an area-weighted average temperature of 0.8 degrees below the 30-year normal for the twelve-state region. This was the first below normal November since 1997. Northern New England averaged above normal with Maine showing by far the largest departure at 3.2 degrees above normal. The rest of the region saw below normal temperatures with West Virginia averaging the most below normal with a -2.9 degree departure. This was a sharp change from November 1999 when temperatures averaged 4.0 degrees above normal area-wide.
Precipitation averaged 1.25 inches below normal across the region during November or 67% of normal. West Virginia was the driest state with just under 2 inches of precipitation recorded, representing 54% of normal. New Hampshire had the least departure from normal with an average of 0.41 inches below normal or 90% of the average. This was the 3rd straight November with below normal precipitation over the Northeast. Four of the last five Novembers also had below normal precipitation.
