The average temperature for the Northeast this October was 48.0, which is 1.1 degrees below the normal. Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia were all warmer than normal this month. Meanwhile, up north the temperature departures were all negative. The greatest temperature departure was -2.6 degrees in Vermont. Maine's average temperature was 41.6 degrees which is actually cold enough to make this the sixth coldest October on record. This October was the first cool month since May in the Northeast.
The rainfall total this October was 4.58 inches, 1.12 inches more than the normal total. This was the wettest October since 1996 and also the first October since then that the Northeast has even been above normal in precipitation. Most of New England was actually drier than normal. Of those states, only Rhode Island was above normal in rainfall and only by 0.26 inches. The rest of the region more than made up for the northern states' lack of rain. Pennsylvania was 1.93 inches above normal and south of there all the states received at least 2.0 inches more rain than normal. Delaware recorded 7.84 inches of rain, more than two times its average total. Only in 1976 did Delaware measure more rain in the month of October.
