October 2000 was a dry month in the Northeast. Six states recorded one of their seven driest Octobers on record - Delaware (3rd driest), Maryland (3rd), Connecticut (4th), West Virginia (5th), New Jersey (6th) and Rhode Island (7th). On the average, less than a half inch of rain fell on Delaware and Maryland during the course of the month. Precipitation for the twelve-state region averaged 2.07 inches, which was 62% of normal. This was the 22nd driest November on record for the Northeast. The state of Maine was closest to normal with 91% of their thirty-year average.
Temperatures were near or warmer than normal in each of region's twelve states. West Virginia averaged 1.7 degrees warmer than normal and Maine was 0.4 degrees cooler than average. The area-weighted regional average was 0.6 degrees warmer than normal and 2.2 degrees warmer than October 1999.
