Monthly Summary

Warm conditions continued during the first month of autumn. The average temperature of 64.1 degrees made this month the 4th consecutive month with above normal temperatures and the 6th warmest September since 1895. Every state in the Northeast reported above normal temperatures, with departures that ranged from 3.2 degrees warmer that normal in West Virginia to 5.1 degrees above normal in New Jersey. The Northeast averaged 3.9 degrees above normal, making this the 6th warmest September since 1895. All of the states except West Virginia placed in the top 15 warmest on record:

Conditions were quite dry in parts of the Northeast in September. Only Maine received above normal rainfall (128% of normal), while New Hampshire (99%), New York (95%) and Vermont (98% had near normal precipitation amounts. Totals in the rest of the region ranged from 10% of normal in Delaware to 78% of normal in Rhode Island. It was the 2nd driest September in 111 years in Delaware and Maryland; the 3rd driest in West Virginia and the 5th driest in New Jersey. Overall, the Northeast received 71% of normal rainfall.
