Climate Impacts - August 2000

Monthly Summary

The cool weather of the Summer of 2000 continued into August. The twelve-state region averaged 1.1 degrees cooler than normal for the month, making it the coolest August since 1997. Connecticut was the coolest state in the region, as compared to normal, averaging 2.0 degrees below the August long-term average. Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island each recorded monthly averages that were 0.7 degrees cooler than normal. Once again this month, 90 degree temperature readings were rare in the Northeast. New York CityÕs Central Park did not record a 90 degree temperature during August for the first time since 1986.

The summer season (June-August) averaged 1.1 degrees cooler than normal. This was the 13th coolest summer in 106 years of record and the coolest since 1992.

Precipitation for the month was quite close to the August normal. The Northeast averaged 94% of the long-term normal on an area-weighted basis, yet was the wettest August since 1997. The driest states were Maine and New Hampshire, with 63% and 79% of normal, respectively. Delaware, meanwhile, recorded 148% of normal this month.

Year-to-date precipitation for the region at the end of the month averaged 31.51 inches, which is 114% of normal and the 12th wettest such period since comparable records began in 1895. For New York State, this same period received 128% of the normal precipitation for their 2nd wettest first eight months of the year on record.
