
Temperature averaged quite close to normal for the month of July. All statewide averages were within one degree of the long-term normal. The area-weighted average temperature for the twelve-state Northeast region of 69.2 degrees was 0.4 degrees cooler than normal. This Julys average temperature exactly matched that of a year ago and was 1.2 warmer than July 1996.
Precipitation was below normal across most of the Northeast during July. The greatest deficits were found along the coast. Delaware reported only 40% of their normal precipitation amount, New Jersey measured just 49%, and Maryland 60%. It was the 4th driest July on record in Delaware, 11th driest in Maryland and 12th driest in New Jersey. The only states that averaged wetter than normal were New York (which was only slightly wetter than normal) and Vermont, which averaged 139% of normal. It was Vermonts 14th wettest July since records began in 1895. Burlington, VT, broke their 101 year-old record for most rain during the month of July with 9.31 inches.
