July was the 2nd consecutive month with above normal temperatures in the Northeast. The average temperature of 71.7 degrees was 2.0 degrees above the 1971-2000 average. It was the warmest July since 1999 and 3 degrees warmer than July 2004. Departures ranged from 0.6 degrees above normal in Maine to 2.8 degrees above normal in New York. It was the 9th warmest July since 1895 in New Jersey and the 10th warmest in New York and Rhode Island.
The Northeast averaged close to normal precipitation this month, 4.35 inches, which is 0.28 inches above normal. This was the driest July since 2002. Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia received the most rainfall, 121%, 134% and 124% of normal, respectively. Massachusetts (90% of normal) and Rhode Island (67% of normal) were the only states with below normal rainfall. Departures in the remaining states were within 5 percentage points of normal.
