Climate Impacts - June 1998

Monthly Summary

June ended the Northeast's string of warmer than normal months at six. Some portions of the region were slightly warmer than normal during June. Vermont, for example, was 1 degree warmer than the long-term average. Most of the region, however, was cooler than normal, with Massachusetts reporting the largest negative departure at minus 1.4 degrees. The area-weighted monthly average temperature for the entire twelve-state northeast region of 64.5 degrees was 0.4 degrees cooler than normal and the coolest June since 1993.

Precipitation was more than adequate throughout the Northeast during June. Monthly rainfall totals were the closest to normal in southern portions of the region, with Delaware averaging 114% of normal and Maryland 112% of normal. The greatest amounts, meanwhile, were found in New England, with monthly totals generally in excess of 7 inches. Heavy rains on June 13-14 were the largest contributors to these high monthly totals. Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts each had more than double their normal monthly rainfall accumulation. It was the second wettest June since records began in 1895 for these four states, as well as, West Virginia. It was the fourth wettest June in both Connecticut and New York. The Northeast overall averaged 6.32 inches of rain, which was 164% of normal. This June trailed only 1972 (8.29 inches) and 1922 (6.75 inches) as the wettest Junes on record in the Northeast.
