A change in the weather pattern over the eastern US brought warm air back to the Northeast and by the month's end, the temperature averaged 68.6 degrees, which was 3.5 degrees above normal. The 12-state average of 68.6 degrees made this month the 4th warmest in 111 years. Nine of the states had temperatures that ranked in the top 10 since 1895:
All of the states in the region reported above normal temperatures in June. Departures ranged from 1.2 degrees above normal in Delaware to 5.3 degrees above normal in New York.
Rainfall totals averaged 79% of normal this month. The total of 3.24 inches was the driest since 1999. Three states tallied amounts that were above normal: Delaware (132% of normal); New Hampshire (132% of normal); and Vermont (124% of normal). Precipitation departures in the rest of the region ranged from 34% of normal in Rhode Island to 97% of normal in New Jersey. It was the 4th driest June since 1895 in West Virginia where 2.05 inches of rain fell in June.
