Cool air settled over the region this month. The average temperature was only 52.0 degrees, making May 2005 the 6th coolest since 1895. Every state in the region recorded below normal averages and all the states fell within the top 12 coolest on record.
Average temperature departures ranged from 3.9 degrees below normal in Rhode Island to 5.1 degrees below normal in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Northeast temperature departure was 4.3 degrees below normal.
Precipitation varied considerably throughout the region, but averaged 80% of normal. Of the five states with above normal precipitation, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, Maine was the wettest, with 161% of normal rainfall. The statewide total of 5.88 inches made this month the 9th wettest May in Maine. New York was the driest state with 43% of normal precipitation. The total was only 1.60 inches, making this month the 6th driest in 111 years in the Empire State.

The months of March, April and May averaged cool and dry in the Northeast. The average temperature of 43.4 was 2.1 degrees below normal and 4.4 degrees cooler that Spring 2004. Departures ranged from 1.7 degrees below normal in Maine to 2.7 degrees below normal in Delaware.
