Temperatures during May averaged 1.8 degrees above normal making it the fourth consecutive above-normal May. This is the fourth month out of five this year with above normal temperatures. New York, New Jersey, and the New England states each averaged more than one degree above normal. Maine had the largest departure at 4.2 degrees above the average. The other four states in the region all averaged closer to normal, with between 0.5 and 0.9 degrees above normal.
Precipitation across the region was generally below normal by about an inch. For all twelve states, the average was 3.12 inches total or 0.73 inches below normal. Only West Virginia averaged above normal, with 6.57 inches representing 157% of the normal amount. This was West Virginia's 6th wettest May in 107 years of records. Maine and New Hampshire averaged the least amount with 1.71 and 1.72 inches, respectively. For April and May combined, New Hampshire was more than four inches below normal. Both Maine and New Hampshire received less than 40% of the normal amount for the two-month period.
