Monthly Summary

May was an exceedingly wet month in New York, but showed more variability across the rest of the Northeast Region. The area-weighted precipitation total for New York was 5.74 inches during May, which represented 160% of normal. It was the state's wettest May since 1990 and the 5th wettest since records began in 1895. Vermont, meanwhile, reported 5.46 inches for rain for their 11th wettest May on record. The Northeast overall averaged 4.50 inches of precipitation or 117% of normal. This was significantly more than the 2.75 inches measured last May. On the dry side, Delaware measured only 59% of normal and Maryland 73%. All other states were between 92% and 118% of normal.

Temperatures for the month averaged 1.1 degrees warmer than normal across the Northeast. At the extremes, West Virginia averaged 2.4 degrees warmer than normal and Maine was 1.3 degrees cooler than normal. This month averaged 1.1 degrees cooler than the same month a year ago.
