Monthly Summary

April marks the seventh month in a row the Northeast has been below normal in temperature. West Virginia and Pennsylvania were the only two states with an above average temperature for the month. West Virginia was in a league of its own this April with a positive temperature departure of 2.5 degrees and the highest monthly temperature of 53.1 degrees. The rest of the extremes were on the cold side of the normal. All of the New England states were more than 1.8 degrees under their respective normals. Maine was by far the coldest with a temperature of 35.7 degrees which makes this April the seventh coldest on record for that state. The region's average of 44.3 degrees for this April makes it the coldest since 1997.

The Northeast as a whole was drier than normal this April, accruing a deficit of 0.75 inches of rain. West Virginia and Rhode Island were the only two states that received significantly more than their average allowance of rain and even then by an amount less than 3/4 of an inch. The rest of the region was dry. Connecticut and Maine were both more than an inch below their respective normals. Maine measured only 1.88 inches of precipitation, the only state under 2 inches on the month.
