Temperatures across the twelve-state region averaged 1.7 degrees above normal for the month of April, the warmest April since 1998. Only Maine and Vermont averaged below normal for the month, at 0.3 and 0.1 degrees below the average, respectively. New York and the rest of New England was less than two degrees above normal. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia were all more than two degrees above normal. West Virginia was the the most above normal at 4.0 degrees above the 30-year average.
April was a very dry month in the Northeast. Precipitation averaged just 1.63 inches across the region which is 1.83 inches below the average or 47% of normal. This was the 4th driest April in 107 years, and the driest since 1900. New York and Maine recorded their driest April ever with 1.17 inches and 0.80 inches of precipitation, respectively. Vermont and New Hampshire had their 3rd driest April in 107 years. Only Pennsylvania and West Virginia averaged more than two inches of precipitation for the month, while Maine and Vermont averaged under one inch.
