
April 2000 was the 11th wettest April on record for the Northeast with a total of 4.58 inches of precipitation (132% of normal). This April was the wettest since 1996. The wettest April in the last 106 years in the Northeast was 1983 with a regional average of 6.60 inches. New York State averaged 5.01 inches of precipitation this month (152% of normal) for their 6th wettest April on record. Massachusetts reported an area-weighted state average of 5.74 inches (146% of normal) for their 10th wettest April. Delaware and New Jersey were the only states which reported deficits for the month with 94% and 75% of normal, respectively.
Temperatures for the month averaged close to normal. The twelve-state region had a departure of 0.4 degrees below normal. The state with the largest negative departure was Delaware at 1.3 degrees cooler than normal. At the other end of the scale, Maine was 0.3 degrees warmer than the thirty-year mean. This April was cooler than the last two.
