Climate Impacts - March 2002

Monthly Summary

Once again temperatures in the Northeast were above normal. This March goes down as the seventh month in a row with a positive temperature departure. The average temperature was 35.8 degrees, which is 1.1 degrees above the March normal. Eleven of the 12 Northeastern states were warmer than usual. The one exception being Maine which practically hit their state average on the dot - only 0.1 degrees cooler than usual. Of the 11 remaining states, all were more than one degree from the average except New Hampshire and West Virginia (positive departures of 0.5 and 0.8 degrees, respectively). Four states were more than two degrees above normal but no records were in danger of being broken as the highest departure was only 2.4 degrees (Delaware).

Precipitation totals for March were close to normal, only 0.36 inches on the wet side. The only state that didn't reach it's average total was Connecticut which, at 4.06 inches, fell 0.36 inches short. West Virginia was the only state that recorded more than an inch over the March average. Its total of 5.01 inches is 126% of the normal precipitation in that state. The other ten states all fell within 100% and 116% of the average. This was the first month with above average precipitation since June of 2001.
