Northeast Regional Climate Center

Climate Impacts - February 1999

Monthly Summary

February 1999 was the Northeast's seventh consecutive warmer-than-normal month. On an area-weighted basis, the month averaged 4.8 degrees warmer than normal. This marked the fourth consecutive February that was warmer than the thirty-year mean and the 13th warmest February since records began in 1895. New York averaged 5.8 degrees warmer than normal, while Delaware was 2.9 degrees warmer than the climatological normal.

February was also a rather dry month for most of the region. The region averaged 2.16 inches of precipitation (rain and melted snow) for the month, which represented 80% of the February normal. This was the 23rd driest February on record. New York was the driest of the region's twelve states with 60% of normal. This month was New YorkÕs 6th driest February on record. The southern New England states were the only part of the region that was wetter than normal. Rhode Island recorded 149% of normal, Connecticut 110% and Massachusetts 104%. A storm that clipped southern New England on the 25th-26th brought 16 inches of snow to Edgartown and 18 inches to Hyannis and was the major contributor to the above normal precipitation amounts for that portion of the region.
