Temperatures during January 2001 averaged 1.6 degrees above normal across the region. This was the 5th straight January with above normal temperatures. All but two of the past 13 Januarys have been above normal. New York was the most above normal at 3.2 degrees above the average, while Maine averaged 13.7 degrees, which was exactly normal for the month. Besides New York and Vermont, all the other ten states in the region were less than 2.0 degrees above normal.
Precipitation across the region averaged 0.96 inches below normal, or 67% of the average. This was the first January with below normal precipitation since 1997, and the driest January since 1985, when the area averaged 1.17 inches below normal. Overall it was the Northeast's 10th driest January in 107 years. Maine received the least precipitation at 1.25 inches or 43% of the normal amount, making it Maine's 5th driest January in the past 107 years. New Hampshire and New York recorded their 8th and 9th driest January, respectively.
